Very complete ear-training program

“Donovan lays out all the stops in this complete package. Often, people who want to really get into the music and hear changes don’t know where to start. This course will has a series of exercises which will dramatically help one to actively learn to hear the changes. I am still not through the book but I can already see differences in my ear for jazz.”

My name is Gilson Schachnik.

I’m a pianist from Brazil and have been teaching in the Ear Training dept. at Berklee for 3 years. The reason I’m writing to you, is that on my never ending quest for finding new ways to better teach, I came across your book and thought it was a great source of material and approaches to bridge ear training and improvisation. I’ll be using many of your ideas and will encourage all my students
to get your book.

I hope one day we can meet and maybe play together.

Take care,

Hi Donovan

Thanks for a great book.
I have just turned 44 and I’m trying to get to grips with training my ears after playing for years (trombone). Where to start and what to do have always been the questions. Apart from the obvious transcribing how can I build up the knowledge that other musicianshalf my age seem to have gained from college courses? I have a full time day job so I need something I can follow on my own and at my own pace.Your book is great - well put together with clear explanations.

I hope you don’t mind, but I would like to send you monthly progress
reports by email. I know you will be busy and you don’t even need to read
them. However, it will help me in being accountable and building in
deadlines. I’ve always dabbled with improvisation, but now I feel it is becoming
an obsession. It takes humbleness to jam with musicians who are a lot
younger - sitting there all night to play one tune. I know I have to become
like a child again with the ear training too. I am making progress and enjoying
the journey.

Thanks again Donovan for a really useful tool.

Best wishes

Subject: Thank you

Dear Donovan,

Thank you for visiting us at Shanghai American School and presenting
your workshops on ear training to students and teachers.
We particularly enjoyed your performance on guitar at the assembly and
the students really enjoyed playing your composition “Per S.R” in jazz
band class.

As you could see, our students do not have much training in ear
training and therefore the workshops were difficult for some of them, however,
I am interested in purchasing a copy of your book and beginning some
more formal ear training with my students. it sounds like your students
at Bilgi University have really done very well with having intensive
training.

I wish you all the best in your future endeavors,
Warmest Regards,
Kellie Alexander
